📚 Welcome to the FINRA Short Interest Tracker

This dashboard visualizes bi-weekly short interest data reported to FINRA across 8,000+ US-listed securities from January 2020 to present. Short interest (SI) is the total number of shares that have been sold short and remain outstanding.

Key Concepts

  • Short Interest (SI) — total shares sold short at a settlement date
  • SI % of Float — short interest divided by float (freely tradable shares); higher % = more crowded short
  • Z-Score — how many standard deviations current SI growth is from that ticker's historical norm. Z ≥ 2 is statistically unusual.
  • Settlement Date — FINRA reports SI as of the 15th and end of each month (~bi-weekly)

📈 Trend Chart

Search and compare short interest trends for up to 8 tickers at once.

  • Search bar — type a ticker symbol or company name. Click a result to add it as a chip.
  • View toggle — switch between Shares Short (absolute), SI % of Float (relative), and Normalized Base=100 (compare momentum).
  • Period buttons — filter the chart to a single year or view the full history.
  • If a ticker lacks float data, the chart auto-switches to Shares Short and shows a note.
  • Click any ticker chip's × to remove it from the chart.

🏷 Themes

Pre-built sector and thematic baskets showing aggregate short interest momentum.

  • Cards — each card represents a theme (e.g., Critical Metals, Meme Stocks). Red border = rising SI, green = covering.
  • Heat score — aggregate Z-score across all constituents. The colored bar shows where the theme sits.
  • Click a card to expand the detail panel with a chart and constituent table.
  • Y-Axis selector — switch between Indexed (normalized), SI % of Float, or Raw SI for the chart and table.
  • Chart View — show the aggregate line, individual constituents, or both.
  • Alerts at the top auto-surface themes with elevated or covering momentum.

📈 Rising Shorts

Finds tickers with statistically unusual short interest buildup or covering activity.

  • Z-Score filter — raise the minimum to surface only the strongest anomalies (default ≥ 2.0).
  • Min SI — filter out micro-cap noise by requiring a minimum short position size.
  • Lookback — compare current SI against 2 weeks, 6 weeks, or 6 months ago.
  • Direction — toggle between Building (shorts increasing) and Covering (shorts decreasing).
  • Column sorting — click any column header to sort. Click again to reverse.
  • Sparkline — shows the last 26 periods of SI history at a glance.
  • Click any row to jump to the Trend Chart with that ticker selected.

📊 Sector Sentiment

  • Sector cards — show the number of rising vs. covering stocks in each sector.
